Question about hearing?

Meet Maria Brown in our Q&A
Get advice from one of Tasmania's true Experts in Hearing
Maria has been part of the hearing industry for 25 years. Maria has had her own clinic for nearly 19 years. For the last 19 years our family business has treated people with dignity and respect when diagnosing hearing loss and what you need to do about it.
“I was sitting at our little farm and thinking I am so proud of what we have achieved but what if I could help more people than the people in Tasmania. The internet has now got unlimited capacity to help people. I constantly see people who feel that they have purchased the wrong hearing aids or ask me to fix the hearing aids they have purchased elsewhere.
Hearing aids aren’t cheap. I find it hard to sit and listen to people upset with their hearing aids. The main reason I get upset is because you are telling me, not telling the person who has sold you those hearing aids. They are enjoying your money while you are seeking advice elsewhere about those hearing aids.
What if I could help people before they purchased hearing aids? What if I could help people who don’t get the care that I give our clients? I see all of our clients every 3 to 4 months and it is all included in the cost of their hearing aids when they purchase hearing aids.
So, this is why I have developed this idea.
Our team is absolutely wonderful in the care we give. We have helped thousands of people with their hearing and with hearing aids.
What if you don’t receive the care and the right advice?
Hearing aids go in the drawer, the brain will not remember speech, and you will become isolated from your family and friends. I needed to make a difference for everyone that needs help not just the people in Tasmania that can come in and see me directly. I will help you understand everything about your hearing aids and about your hearing loss.
Our industry sometimes does not do this right when it comes to advice. The desire to sell products over rules care. Specialists also get paid commission to sell hearing aids and quite often have targets they have to sell every month. I am not criticising this process lets be very clear about that. I don’t tell people how to run their business. But I do feel that it isn’t all about selling hearing aids it's also about the next 5 to 7 years of wearing those hearing aids as well.

Five important things to remember
Prices vary by the thousands. The one thing that I have learnt over the last nearly 30 years of being a Hearing Specialist is that hearing aids need to be maintained.
This is a cost that can be very expensive if you don't do your research.
Make sure you get the best deal for yourself that you can. That starts by taking the time to get multiple opinions and quotes. Especially when it comes to after sales care and costs.
Hearing aids are a reasonable cost. They last for 5 to 7 years so it is an important decision. I believe that you should be given choice and you should trial hearing aids. I apply common sense to this decision. There are not many things that I would buy that I haven’t tried first. If I am laying out significant money I want to make sure I am not unhappy with anything I buy.
You have a right to ask the same thing.
If you have difficulties your specialist should work with you to make sure that you get what you want from your hearing system. It is all about your hearing not what you have purchased. You need help, you don’t need to be sold something in this circumstance.
Your hearing loss is yours and you are unique. Your hearing care should be tailored to suit you and your needs.
- What do you want?
- Do you want your hearing aids to hide?
- Do you want your hearing aids to stream so the phone is easier?
- Do you struggle with the TV?
Be very clear what you want. These needs must be met. Your specialist needs to listen and try very hard to meet those needs. We are on your side and we want you interacting with your family and friends to the best of your ability. There are communication strategies that help with understanding what is happening with your hearing and we need to help educate you to deal with hearing loss and the impact it has in your world.
When you find it hard to come into your hearing clinic will you be looked after?
I hope so. Our clients need the help.
Sometimes things happen and we can get to you easier than you can come to us. This is an important service as you need to keep hearing no matter where you are. None of us ever want to think about this bit we do need to take this into consideration as that support is necessary.
The team that helps you is very important. You need help every step of the way.
You don’t buy care.
It just happens when you are with the right team.
Making sure that you receive the best care you can possibly get is important.
Ethics, reputation, these are important factors in your choice of care. Does the clinic you're dealing with treat you like your part of the family as well as high ethical and clinical standards?
So often we just need that care and someone to understand and act on it. The promise of care is an important factor in the decision you make for hearing care. Confidence in your clinic will make sure that you can go out in the world and enjoy your hearing.
